Captain Frank Roque glanced up from his reports on the computer screen as his door quickly shot open. There was a young female police officer chasing Dr. Katherine Peres into his office.
“I’m sorry sir,” said the young police officer. “She didn’t want to wait until I got you.”
“It’s okay,” said the captain. “I’ll take it from here.”
“I’m sorry sir.”
“Don’t worry about it, just go back to your duties,” he continued. “There is no need for you to apologize for the doctor’s rudeness.”
Dr. Peres smiled as the young officer blinked rapidly and walked out of the office shutting the door on her way out.
“I don’t like when you send that Nick Barnum to my place of business,” she started. “He is a rude, sick man!”
“A hello captain, would have been nice.”
She shrugged.
“Well?”
“Hello captain.”
“Good, now what is it that you want?”
“I want you to keep that animal out of my place of business.”
“Nick Barnum?”
She nodded.
“Oh well,” said the captain as he rose from behind his desk. He gestured for the doctor to sit. Dr. Peres stood there with her arms folded and refused the offer. With a thin smile, the captain sat back down. “He’s an animal, you say?”
“That’s correct,” she replied. “He is so smug, and his attitude is reckless. I don’t want him around me or at my place of work!”
The captain nodded slowly.
“Did you hear me?”
“You’re shouting, how can I not?”
She grumbled.
“Did he make a pass at you?”
“A what?”
“A pass, did he make a pass at you?”
“No.”
“Did you have sex with him?”
“Are you fucking crazy?”
“I’m just trying to figure out why you don’t want him around you.”
“He’s a Neanderthal!”
“My wife thinks I’m one too, but she still keeps me around.”
“Listen, captain. I’m not asking you to do me a favor. I’m telling you to keep that animal behind bars! Or at least away from me.”
Captain Roque seemed taken aback, although he didn’t facially express it, he just did so deep down inside. “How do you suggest I do that?”
“Talk to him,” she said.
“He doesn’t work for me.”
“He respects you!”
“And I respect him.”
“You’re just like him!”
“I told you, my wife thinks I’m a Neanderthal too.”
“I come down here just to state a fact,” she said as she placed both hands on the captain’s desk and moved in toward him. “He gets my goat. I don’t want him around. Do something about it. I’m begging you as a tax-payer.”
He smiled. “Just have sex with him.”
She was appalled.
“Why look so dismayed?”
“You’re an animal too!”
“But I’m married.”
She stared at him.
“Listen, Katherine,” said the captain as he stood up. “I will speak to Nick Barnum for you. I will suggest he stay away from you. If that’ll make you happy, I’ll do it. But I just don’t see why you hate him so much.”
She glared.
“I know he can rub people the wrong way, but this city is lucky to have him.”
“Then let the city keep him, and let him stay out of my way!”
He smiled and sat back down.
“Is that clear?” She demanded.
The captain rubbed his temple with his fingers and tried to forget that he was talking to a tax-payer. He was also wondering why he allowed her to extend her rage. She was completely out of line and he did nothing to put her in her place. Maybe, just maybe , she had something. Maybe Nick Barnum was a pain in everyone’s ass. Maybe.
“It’s clear,” he said. “I’ll talk to him and maybe he will understand the clash between the two of you.”
“I don’t clash with him!”
“Yeah, you do,” he said. “And you’re starting to clash with me.”
She huffed and quickly stormed out of the office.
“What a sight,” he half whispered. “If she’d only sleep with the man. I’ll bet all the hatred and frustration would melt off of her. She wants him.”
