O’Brien poked his head inside the captain’s office. “Captain, we have a survivor!”
“What?”
“A killing last night, didn’t go the way the murderer had planned,” he said.
“What the hell are you talking about?”
“The cross-over murders!”
“Someone survived?”
O’Brien stepped completely into the captain’s office wearing a grin on his face. “Dr. Peres called my office and told me to get down to the hospital quickly before we lose him.”
“An eye witness,” he said softly.
“Yes sir!”
“Did she go into any details on what happened?”
“No sir,” he replied. “She just told me to get down as quickly as possible.”
“Stabbed?”
“Several times,” he answered. “She said he lost a great deal of blood.”
“But she’s keeping him alive?”
“She’s keeping him alive, and audible, sir.”
“So there might not be a fourth body if he lives, right?”
“He may not live, so he might just be the fourth victim.”
The captain grimaced.
“Lets get moving sir,” O’Brien stated hopefully not sounding like he was giving a direct order to his captain. “We don’t want to lose this window of opportunity.”
“I understand.”
“He’s in room 308,” O’Brien added.
“Stand by,” ordered the captain.
“Aye sir.”
“Call Nick Barnum.”
“What?”
“I want Nick to meet us there too.”
“Captain, this is official police business!”
“This is a murder investigation!” shouted the captain.
“With all due respect...”
“That was a direct order!”
“Captain?”
“Now.”
O’Brien took his cell phone out of his pocket and dialed Nick’s number.
Nick here.
“Hey Nick, O’Brien.”
Hey Pete, what’s up?
“There is a break in the Cross-Over murders,” he said reluctantly. “Captain Roque wants you to meet us at the hospital.”
What room number?
“308,” he said evenly.
I’m on my way!
Nick slapped the cell phone shut and shoved it back into his pocket.
“You driving?” the captain asked as he rushed toward the disappointed detective.
“Yes sir.”
“Don’t be upset,” said the captain. “Having Nick around on this case is a good thing.”
“But he’s a civilian, sir.”
“I understand that.”
“Whatever happened to protect and serving the public?” he continued. “Isn’t Nick part of that public we were paid to protect?”
“He’s also doing a job for us.”
“We’re not even paying him, right?”
“He’s getting something from petty-cash.”
“Understood sir,” he said softly.
“Nick needs to be in this loop,” said the captain. “And I do understand why you’re feeling the way you do. But we just need him.”
“I said it was fine, sir.”
“Your facial expression doesn’t show it.”
“Noted sir.”
“Let me get my hat,” said the captain.
“Captain, forget your hat,” said O’Brien. “Lets get on the move, before Nick gets there and hogs the spotlight.”
“Trust me, Pete,” said the captain. “Dr. Peres won’t allow Nick to do anything without us.”
“How do you know sir?”
He smiled.
Damn Nick! O’Brien thought to himself.
